The Biblical Worldview of Investing
August 6, 2026 | Bob Barber

The Biblical Worldview of Investing today is referred to as Biblically Responsible Investing (BRI), which began in the mid-1990s and has now become mainstream among Christian believers as a way to glorify God. BRI is an investment strategy that aligns financial choices with Christian values by screening out companies involved in activities contrary to biblical values (such as abortion, pornography, gambling, and tobacco) while seeking companies that positively reflect Christian principles and biblical stewardship, aiming to glorify God through both financial returns and ethical conduct.
The following gives a scriptural basis for a Biblical Worldview of Investing with application.
Ownership
Psalms 24:1 The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it;
Application: God owns all our investments and allows us to manage them. Our role is that of a manager.
Returns
1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
Application: The love of returns is the same as the love of money. Christians need to be cautious about allowing greed to dictate investment decisions. Returns should never take precedence over following Biblical guidelines.
Morality
2 Corinthians 6:17 Therefore, “Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you
Application: Come out and be separate from investing in companies that knowingly violate and/or support immoral agendas and principles. How? By screening and researching what they do. which is easier than ever before, thanks to technology and Christian websites dedicated to BRI.
Avoidance
Exodus 20:13-14 You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery.
Psalm 139:13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
Application: Avoid investing in companies that support or pay for an employee's abortion, manufacture the abortion pill, or support Planned Parenthood, the nation's biggest abortion provider.
Fear
2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
Application: Be wary of professional fearmongers who sell conspiracy theories to promote high-commission financial products as the solution.
Diversification
Ecclesiastes 11:2 Invest in seven ventures, yes, in eight; you do not know what disaster may come upon the land
Application: Diversify across all eleven sectors of the economy. Taking this principle to math 100/8=12.5% and 100/7=14.28%, meaning don't put more than 12.5% to 14.28% in any one sector of the economy, or disaster may come upon your investment portfolio.
Wisdom
Proverbs 7:7 I saw among the simple, I noticed among the young men, a youth who had no sense.
Proverbs 18:15 The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, for the ears of the wise seek it out.
Application: Make investment decisions based on facts and math, not emotions or hearsay; diversify across many sectors by company size, financial strength, markets they serve, and avoid the day-to-day financial media hype and articles written by inexperienced people describing day traders as investors.
Consideration
Proverbs 14:15 The simple believe anything, but the prudent give thought to their steps.
Application: Avoid making irrational decisions driven solely by greed, and stay focused on long-term goals.
False Hope
Proverbs 14:7-8 Stay away from a fool, for you will not find knowledge on their lips. The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways, but the folly of fools is deception.
1 Timothy 6:9-10 Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
Application: If a return sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Watch out for Ponzi schemes that guarantee unreasonable returns, Get-rich-quick schemes, and investment courses promising you can beat Wall Street. These schemes are big money makers for those selling them. Be careful not to allow greed to dictate your investment decisions.
Consistency
Proverbs 13:11 Dishonest money dwindles away, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow.
Application: Not every investment will be a winner. Investing is a long-term marathon, not a short-term sprint. Investors are NOT day traders, and day traders are NOT investors. In the long term, it's time, not timing, that wins.
Seasons
Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot,
Application: Bear markets, volatility, and up-and-down market cycles are expected and a regular part of life.
Planning
Proverbs 21:5 The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.
Application: Investing should always focus on long-term goals from 5 to 20 years, based on years and decades, with a well-thought-out financial plan updated annually. Otherwise, you can quickly get off course.
Idolatry
Exodus 20:3 "You shall have no other gods before me"
Called to be Different
Matthew 5:13-16 You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven
1 Peter 1:15-16 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy."
Romans 12:2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Application: Christian Investors are called to follow a Biblical Worldview for investing by aligning their faith with their investment decisions through utilizing Biblically Responsible Investing.
